Moving house in Delhi seems to be easy until your moving day comes.
The cartons are ready. The furniture is still sitting where it has always been. Then the security guard asks for the vehicle number, the society says the service lift needs a booking, and suddenly the mover's truck is waiting outside while you are making phone calls.
If you are planning a house shift in Delhi, a little preparation can save a surprising amount of time.

So, what should you do before the movers arrive? Use this Delhi house shifting checklist.
1. Confirm Your Moving Date and Time
First, lock the moving date. Don't only tell the movers, "Anytime Saturday." Confirm:
Moving date
Expected packing or loading time
Pickup address
Destination address
Number of floors
Lift availability
Vehicle requirements
Any special items

2. Ask Your Delhi Society About Moving Rules
This is one of the easiest things to forget. If you live in an apartment or gated society, contact the RWA, maintenance office or security desk before moving day.
Ask:
Do I need a move-out permission or NOC?
Does society require the truck number in advance?
Which entrance should the moving vehicle use?
Is there a fixed moving window?
Do I need to reserve the service lift?
Is there a refundable security deposit?
Rules vary from one society to another, so don't assume that your new building follows the same process as your current one. Recent Delhi-NCR moving guidance also recommends confirming society permissions, lift slots and vehicle access before moving day.
3. Reserve the Service Lift
If you live on the 5th, 8th or 12th floor, the lift becomes part of your moving plan. Book the service lift if your building requires it.
Then check:
Lift size
Allowed moving hours
Maximum load
Whether protective padding is required
Whether movers can use the passenger lift
Whether a lift operator is needed
This matters particularly in Delhi-NCR high-rise societies where moving activity may be restricted to specific hours.
And measure the lift if you have a particularly large wardrobe, sofa, refrigerator or other bulky item. This five-minute check can prevent a very awkward conversation on moving day.
4. Check Where the Moving Truck Can Park
Tell your movers where the vehicle can stop. This sounds obvious. It isn't.
Some Delhi residential lanes are too narrow for larger vehicles to reach the building entrance. In other locations, roadside parking may be restricted or security may require advance vehicle details.
Check the distance between:
Truck parking –> building entrance –> lift –> flat
If the vehicle cannot park close to your building, tell Relocation Express before the move.

5. Declutter Before the Packers Arrive
Do not pay to move things you no longer want. Walk through every room and separate items into four groups:

Discard: Broken or unusable belongings.
Start with wardrobes, storage cabinets, balconies and old cartons. Delhi house moves often become unnecessarily large because customers pack everything simply because it is already there. Less inventory can mean fewer cartons, less loading and easier unpacking.
6. Keep Important Documents and Valuables With You
Do not put everything into the moving truck. Keep important personal belongings with you, particularly:

Create one small "carry with me" bag. It should stay with you throughout the move.
7. Back Up Your Digital Data
Before unplugging computers, laptops and storage devices, back up important files.

Take photographs from different angles if an item already has a scratch, dent or mark.
This gives you a record of the item's condition before transportation. It is particularly useful when you are moving several large household items at once.
9. Prepare Appliances Before Moving
Some appliances need preparation before the movers arrive. For example, your refrigerator should be emptied and prepared ahead of transportation.

If an appliance requires technician support for disconnection or installation, arrange that separately rather than waiting until the movers are standing outside.
10. Make a List of Heavy and Fragile Items
Tell the moving team about unusual items before moving day. Examples include:

14. Keep the New Home Ready
The destination needs preparation too. Before the truck arrives, confirm:

Security permission
Contact person
Preferred unloading area
Room arrangement
If possible, clean the new home before the furniture arrives. Decide where the bed, sofa, dining table and major wardrobes should go.
It is much easier to tell the unloading team where something belongs before the furniture enters the room.
15. Keep Delhi Traffic in Mind
Moving schedules in Delhi cannot always be planned around distance alone.
